New skipper Goadby won the toss and decided to insert the opposition on a soft track. Bennett (2-26) took an early wicket but it wasn’t until they turned to their two debutants that Aston began to take control. First Hirab (3-25) made the breakthrough and then took the vital wicket of Wallace(43), he was well supported by Rauf(1-39) as four quick wickets fell just before the drinks break. It took a brilliant catch, in the deep, by Jordan Taylor to break up a partnership that was looking to take the game away from Aston. With the fall of this wicket it was only left for the skipper to weave his magic and polish off the tail with figures of 4-14. After the break Aston set off to try and knock off the runs, something they had failed to do twice against the same opposition last season. With a opening stand of 41 between Christoforou(27) and Wem(19) Aston’s reply got off to great start, then 4 wickets fell cheaply and at 63-4 Aston knew they had a game on their hands. Then a solid partnership of 39 between the returning Cronin(23) and Man of the Match Bennett(32*) got Aston close to the winning line and it was fitting that the new Captain hit the winning runs with 7 overs to spare.
