Date: Sat January 19th 2008.
Match: AOE 1sts v Shrewsbury. ( League. )
Result: Aston Old Eds 15 -- 0 Shrewsbury.
Report:
Aston got off to a flying start putting the visitors under pressure almost from the off. Franklin crossed the Shrews' line but was called back for a knock on. Great line out work from Phipps and Willetts gave Aston plenty of ball to drive to maintain the pressure but their opponents tackled well. From a scrum Aston launched several forward charges and Brown was able to drive over with the conversion failing. Aston took up the cudgels immediately and were soon back in the Shrews' 22. McNamee kicked a penalty to open up an eight point lead. They seemed well set to add to this but Shrews raised their game and, although they kept Aston in the middle of the park, they made heavy work of achieving real progress. They maintained their effort till the break and denied Aston further scores though Aston finished with a creditable attack through forwards and backs with McNamee prominent.

The second period was pretty dire with plenty of whistle from the referee and many stoppages for injury. This ruined any flow and was poor fare for the spectators. It was only late in the game that Aston were able to rise above it and they produced, if not a purple patch, a strong rally which brought a try for Phipps after good work from Watts with Maksymczuk kicking the conversion. Shrews, to their credit, fought back and were attacking as the final whistle blew but Aston had defended their line and conceded no breach.

The Thirds beat Aldridge Seconds 19-6. Gardener and Glenn scored tries and Gardener kicked a conversion with two penalties for Bradley. The Fourths went down 42-14 to a strong side from Halesonians. Beard got two tries and Greaves made both conversions.
