AOE 1sts v Old Salts. ( League. ) |
| Result: |
Old Salts 8 -- 22 Aston Old Eds. |
| Report: |
|
Games between these two sides have been physical and well contested in recent seasons and this was no exception. Aston ran out comfortable winners but were made to fight hard for their prize. They were on top against the wind but did not find the level of efficiency required to capitalise fully on their superiority in the first period.
Salts took the lead with a breakaway try which they could not convert but McNamee soon reduced their lead with a penalty goal. Aston began to exert a lot of pressure on the home side and, after a series of scrums and line outs and several off sides by Salts, the referee had had enough and awarded Aston a penalty try which Maksymczuk converted.
Salts, with a twelve point deficit, raised their game and acquitted themselves well having lost a man to a red card and they made Aston struggle for a significant time. Maksymczuk impressed with his touch kicking and Woodward and Watts at number eight and scrum half struck up a good understanding which helped keep their opponents at bay. Solid work from the forwards, and, in particular, Phipps in the line out led to a well taken try by McNamee which Maksymczuk converted before Salts hit back with a drop goal but Aston had the last word when McNamee collected his second try to conclude the scoring.
The Seconds went down 10-5 at Shrewsbury playing almost the whole game with fourteen men and Drysdale got Aston's try. The Thirds were victorious 22-12. Tries were scored by Jones, Bruce and Cambridge with two conversions and a penalty for Bradley but the Fourths were defeated 43-0 by a very strong Burton Thirds.
