AOE 1sts v Bourneville. ( Shield. ) |
| Result: |
Bourneville 10 -- 8 Aston Old Eds. |
| Report: |
|
On a wet pitch, and with a biting wind blowing, Bourneville made a tremendous start camping in Aston's 22 and almost scoring in the corner in the opening few minutes. They fielded a strong pack of forwards and had two dangerous centres and a winger with pace. They ran the ball hard and without making mistakes in the early stages and Aston did well to keep them at bay. Their pressure led to an Aston drop out and the kick went deep. Aston did not chase well enough and did not throw up a proper line of defence and the Bourneville number eight ran through the broken field almost making it between the posts before he was hauled down. Quick ball from the subsequent ruck saw the left wing cross in the corner and the conversion was well struck and true. Aston replied with their first visit to the Bourneville half and exerted some pressure up front. They were rewarded with a penalty which Bennett, on his return from long term injury, converted. Aston began to do much better but the home side were always a threat and some fine tackling by Wood, Love and Finn, in particular helped them to stay in the game. However, a penalty, swiftly blown by the referee, gave Bourneville a 10-3 lead before Aston got well into their stride with their forwards showing their mettle and producing a penalty attempt for Bennett on the stroke of half time. Unfortunately the attempt hit the very top of the right hand post and was not given.
Aston made a very strong restart and forced the home side to take the ball over their own line and touch down. From the scrum Grice found his way through on the blind side to score but the conversion did not succeed. The game was evenly contested for a while but Aston made mistakes and gave their opponents too much ball. In their turn Bourneville's backs, under pressure from tacklers, failed to find any fluency in their passing and running and the dangers which they had posed early in the game were not as apparent in the second period. No further scoring was managed by either team and, though the game finished with Aston doing the better attacking, they could not make up the two point deficit and had to reflect that they had been denied victory by the width of a post.
The Seconds took 14 men to Newport and went down 52-18. Parker, Fulthorpe and Morris got tries and Kyle kicked a penalty. The Thirds went down24-10 to Essington Firsts and Alexander scored a try with a penalty and conversion for Bradley. Cleghorn notched the only points for the Fourths with a try in their 29-5 defeat to Willenhall Thirds. Aston are at home to Ludlow on Saturday.
