AOE 1sts v Leek ( League. ) |
| Result: |
Leek 10 -- 5 Aston Old Eds. |
| Report: |
|
Aston made the trip to Leek expecting to do well after an encouraging performance the previous week. They had the upper hand through most of the game but could not put enough points on the board to carry off the spoils.
Aston exerted great pressure close to the Leek line in the early stages and came close to scoring on more than one occasion but it was Leek who were to strike the first blow when they broke away and grabbed an unconverted try. Within five minutes or so they had repeated the feat and established a ten point lead which they carried into half time.
Leek continued to tackle well after the break but Aston struck back from a line out which was driven powerfully and Baldock claimed the try which went unconverted. Aston were the better side but Leek remained steadfast in their defence and, though Aston spent the last part of the game camped on the Leek line with a succession of rucks, they could not force their way across.
The Seconds had a great win over Camp Hill 32-11 with two tries for Finn, and one each for Drysdale, Cleghorn, Watts and Logan. The Thirds beat Kings Norton 49-0. Bradley and Buckle got two tries and a conversion each but could not beat Gardener's hat trick. Other try scorers were Carroll, Woodcock and Griffiths. The Fourths went down to Bourneville Thirds 10-5 with a try for Cooksey.
