AOE 1sts v Old Silhillians. ( Friendly. ) |
| Result: |
Aston Old Eds 17 -- 47 Old Silhillians. |
| Report: |
|
Aston put out an experimental side and paid the price against resourceful opponents who had turned up determined to win. Aston struggled in the scrum throughout and Phipps, in his first game at number eight and Watts at scrum half, did well to get the ball away under intense pressure. Sils opened with strong attacks and got an early try. They missed a couple of penalties but were soon on the board again and stretched their lead to 26 points with three more tries before Aston were able to redress the deficit. Aston launched a strong attack from the backs which Finn took forward to establish a good position. From a ruck near the posts Bennett was able to throw a dummy, run clear to the line and convert his own try. Aston were first on the board after the break with a try for Zubayru with the backs, once again, doing sterling work but it led to an immediate response from the visitors as they pierced the Aston defence and went in from long range. Aston resumed their offensive and, following a big charge by Drysdale, Buckley drove over to claim a try and reduce the deficit to 16 points. Aston lost Phipps to a yellow card and the fourteen laboured on. However, after the pressure exerted on them by the visiting forwards, they could not prevent two late tries from the visitors whose pace in the backs enabled them to capitalise on their forward strength.
The Seconds beat Old Salts 19-10 with tries for Woodward, Parker and Bradley and two conversions for Wall. The Thirds were victorious over Harborne Seconds by 20-12. Tries were scored by Thomas, Cowley and Cooksey whilst Marshall made one conversion and Jarvis dropped a goal.
