AOE 1sts v Wolverhampton. ( League. ) |
| Result: |
Aston Old Eds 22 -- 32 Wolverhampton. |
| Report: |
|
Aston began down the slope and Bennett's positional kicking, with the wind, enabled him to open the scoring with a penalty. He topped this with a great break which set up a scrum and a powerful drive from the forwards saw the ball spun along the backs for McNamee to get over in the left hand corner. In line with his impressive start Bennett kicked an excellent conversion. Aston continued to use the wind and the slope well but Wolves won their share of ball before Bennett hit the post with another penalty. Aston increased their lead with a try from Finn who, with his winger as decoy, went inside the last defender to leave an easy conversion for Bennett. Wolves were stung into action and mounted their best attack of the half, exerting pressure on Aston ten metres out and their sweat gave them a penalty which was successfully kicked. Aston led 17 - 3 at the break but the pitch and the weather were important factors and Aston knew that it would be tough against the elements. They looked justified in being confident on the evidence of the first period but Wolves had other plans and punished Aston's errors. They got on the board early when, after an Aston mark, the kick failed to find touch and the ball was run back for the visitors' first try which they did not convert. They maintained their pressure down the slope and put their centre in near the posts after he had picked a superb line through the defence and the points were added by the kicker. They then took the lead with a penalty which roused Aston to demonstrate some excellent forward work and, after a series of penalties conceded by Wolves, Watts set up the attack which led to Goldsmith's try in the right hand corner which regained the lead for the home side. This was to be Aston's final score but Wolves were not finished and grabbed two converted tries before the whistle, leaving their best till last, exploiting Aston's mistake as they tried to play catch up from their own line.
The Seconds look well set to win the inaugural Second Team League if they can maintain their form and they beat the league leaders 22 - 15 at Bromsgrove with two tries for Harcombe and one for Alexander. Maksymczuk kicked a penalty and two conversions. The Thirds lost 5-27 to Handsworth Seconds and Steedman got the try. The Fourths continued their solid form in a 40 - 20 victory over Handsworth Thirds. Beard sailed over for four tries and there was a try each for Harvey and Turner with Greaves kicking four conversions.
