Date: Sat ist October
Match: AOE 1sts v Ludlow ( League )
Result: Aston 23 - 8 Ludlow
Report:
Aston played against the slope and into the teeth of a stiff breeze which made kicking a lottery and each side made gifts to the other in their efforts to escape from trouble. Aston put on the early pressure and after Ludlow had soaked it up for a prolonged period, Maksymczuk kicked a penalty from 20 metres. Neither team was able to find the space they needed to make the game more attractive as the tackling and covering duties were performed well by all. Aston were greatly in control and Maksymczuk kicked a second penalty before Aston created a good try, scored by Bradley after solid work from Grice and others. Maksymczuk converted before notching a third penalty which Ludlow cancelled with one of their own. At the break Aston were 16--3 up with the elements now in their favour. They made a good start, almost going over in the opening exchanges. They maintained lots of pressure and drove Ludlow back mightily in a five metre scrum but they could not top the effort with a try. Ludlow broke out and made a positive series of plays before they were awarded a penalty 14 metres out. They took it quickly and put their right wing over in the corner, catching Aston napping. Aston went back on the offensive and put the screws on Ludlow up front. Ludlow picked up a yellow card under the assault and Aston scored a second try through Horrocks with assistance from the ever busy Goldsmith. Maksymczuk did the honours with the conversion but failed with a later penalty attempt as the game developed into a mid-pitch stalemate and Aston ended as good value in their second league win.
