Aston Old Eds 26 -- 15 Yardleians |

| Yards brought their usual brawn-stacked pack with them and made a flying start against the slope. An early five metre scrum saw the number eight pick up and dummy his way over before Aston had caught breath. They maintained their field position and built on their lead with a penalty goal as Aston soaked up the pressure. However,a determined chase by Merrick, somewhat against the run of play at this stage, led to a good try after a tap penalty and kick. The conversion sailed wide but the score put heart into Aston who began to play with some aplomb, running the ball into space and making good headway. Solid forward driving won Aston a strong position and they were awarded a penalty five metres out from which Andy Wood scored and Blake Bennett hit the conversion. Further positive contributions from all quarters kept the screws on Yards as their forwards began to wilt and Bennett was narrowly wide with another penalty attempt on the stroke of half time. The second period found Aston much in charge as the backs found the room to do damage to their opponents' defence but it was by no means easy as Yards put up their normal, belligerent performance. They drove Aston back at a line out and touched down, successfully kicking the conversion to tie the scores. Bennett kicked a penalty for a three point lead and repeated the exercise with another in short order. As Aston pressed again they moved the ball swiftly from right to left and Rob Chesnor went over in the corner for a well deserved team try . This was Aston's best all round performance of the season and the backs continued their recent improved form. The forwards stood toe to toe in the battle and gradually had the better of the exchanges as the game progressed. |
