Aston posted another solid league win at Shrewsbury. It was no easy task, however, and the home team had the better of the opening ten minutes. Aston were heavily penalised and Shrews scored a try when the ball was worked from the back of a ruck and their number eight crashed over. The conversion was simple and Shrews kept the lid on with an impressive driving game and plenty of good line out ball. Aston eased their way into the game and, after a swift breakout, Bennett was able to kick a penalty from in front of the posts. Aston took up much where they left off and after Shrews had missed a penalty attempt, Bennett slotted his second at the other end. Aston trailed by a point and, given the breeze at their backs, needed more before the whistle. Bennett made a great break out of defence and passed to full back, Wall, in support. He drew the last but one defender and passed to Chesnor who had the gas to round the last man and Bennett converted. The advantage offered by the wind was now with Shrews and Aston's six point lead looked slim. The home side had soon narrowed the gap with a penalty but Bennett pulled one back for Aston and these were to prove to be the last points of the game. The game was far from over and Shrews exerted enormous pressure on Aston throughout the last quarter. Aston's determination was put to the test and they endured a fairly torrid time but they held their line and their discipline and Shrews failed to prosper from the enormous effort which they had put in. Aston are at home to Old Coventrians on Saturday.
