AOE 1sts v Yardleians ( League ) |
| Result: |
Yardleians 15-- 21 Aston Old Eds |
| Report: |
|
On their own turf Aston had beaten Yards easily and they made a breezy start winning most of the ball and keeping Yards on the back foot. Some promising early opportunities went begging for the away side and Yards' backs were not too hot in the marking department when Vlahakis picked up from number eight. Aston kicked a penalty to the corner and, from the resulting line out, Franklin claimed the try for Bennett to convert. Aston remained on the offensive and squandered two scoring chances, the second being an unnecessary attempt at a miss pass when simple hands were the order of the day. There was only one side in it at this stage and Yards' backs looked all at sea when Aston attacked. Aston stole Yards' ball at the line out and Maksymczuk got past his man to feed Wood who bounced in off the post to give Bennett another simple kick. Yards refused to lie down and staged a brave fight back as Aston dropped their workrate and, once Yards realised that they could get back into the game, they upped the ante and hogged the ball up front, running down the clock and denying Aston the opportunity to run at their backs. So well did Yards do in the forwards that they drove Aston back almost twenty metres to score and convert on the stroke of half time and opened the second period with another try when Aston failed to cope with loose ball and a great pick up and drive saw its just reward. To add to their woes Aston lost their hooker to a yellow card but had a share of luck when an untidy passage of play gave Franklin his second try which Bennett converted. Yards strove hard to pull back the deficit but could only add a penalty before the whistle to give Aston a six point margin which should have been much greater.
