Events conspired against Aston in this game but they were the authors of their own misfortune, making basic errors and giving away nine points in the first ten minutes. They failed to catch the ball from the kick off and were quickly penalised, losing three points. Two missed touches and some indiscipline cost them six more in short order as Lichfield opened up strongly down the slope. It was all Lichfield in the early stages but Aston coped without looking assured and made a visit to the Lichfield 22 after fifteen minutes. A penalty kicked to the corner led to a series of furious Aston assaults on the Lichfield line. The visiting team's defence, particularly close to the ruck, was excellent but they conceded another penalty which, though easy, Aston failed to convert. Aston resumed the pressure and a great attack from a line out took them to the Lichfield line but they could not hold the position and Lichfield broke away to notch another penalty at the other end. Aston were soon awarded an easy penalty, having gone back on the offensive, but this time it struck the post before the half time whistle. Aston did all the early work in the second period but it was Lichfield who added a penalty to their score. Aston responded quickly when Bennett put one over after a long kick from Maksymczuk. Aston soon added a try when they knocked on in a promising attack and took the ball against the head for Grice to spot the gap and sprint clear with Bennett converting. This took Aston to within a try and conversion to win the game and they tried mightily but Lichfield's forwards did the necessary and closed the game out by keeping the ball for the rest of the match. Aston had threatened Lichfield's line many times and scored the only try and could easily have won but the early mistakes and two easy missed penalties saw Lichfield walk away with the spoils.
