Date: Sat 25th March
Match: AOE 1sts v Bridgnorth ( League )
Result: Aston Old Eds 9 -- 24 Bridgnorth
Report:
This was a very important game for both sides with promotion in the offing
but it was Bridgnorth who did the double over Aston as they repeated their
success of the first league game of the season. Aston were first into their
stride, however, as, from early pressure, Bennett dropped a smart goal in
the first two minutes and followed this up with a penalty as Aston made good
use of the slope. Bridgnorth came back and had an unsuccessful drop goal
attempt of their own before Bennett missed a penalty for Aston at the other
end. Bridgnorth had the upper hand in the backs, looking the more
threatening and the more adventurous and they possessed a potent threat in
their full back whose incursions caused Aston problems throughout whilst
their fly half pegged Aston back time and again with his siege gun boot. The
backs soon punched two small holes in the Aston defence and Aston conceded a
try near the posts which was converted. An immediate response from Aston saw
them regain the lead with a penalty from Bennett but some poor covering from
Aston left them under pressure on their 22 and Bridgnorth got their full
back over with some good inter- passing. The try was converted to leave
Bridgnorth with a five point lead at the break and the advantage of the
slope in the second period. Aston did their best but they struggled to find
any quality platform from which to launch attacks. They were under some
stress in the scrum and the line out suffered from skilful poaching by the
away side but, to their credit, they took the game to Bridgnorth in the
loose and acquitted themselves well. They were unlucky not to get on the
sheet when they almost touched down behind the posts after a clever kick
from Maksymczuk. Bridgnorth widened the gap with a penalty and drove Aston
mightily off their own ball in a scrum but Aston, undaunted, fought back to
establish a strong position with a line out five metres from their
opponents' line. Bridgnorth stole the ball and broke away in a swift attack
which took them across the Aston line and left them with an easy conversion
which was the last score of the game. Both sides continued at full tilt but
Aston's supply of line out ball dried up and they struggled to make space
behind the scrum whilst the forwards staged a strong rally towards the end
as Bridgnorth started to lose their shape in the last ten minutes.
