Match: AOE 1sts v Wednesbury ( League )
Result: Wednesbury 20 -- 10 Aston Old Eds
Report:

Aston had beaten their opponents earlier in the season but they were rather depleted and expected a tough game. This was what they got from a beefy pack and backs who did their jobs well enough to make the difference. Wednesbury exerted the early pressure but Aston made an adventurous breakout and Bennett potted a penalty in front of the posts. Immediately Wednesbury got one of their own and continued their pressure. Aston ran everything through their backs and made solid advances until Bennett held up the defence, found a gap and put Wall in at the corner with an excellent pass and the try was converted. Wednesbury were then to lose a man to a red card which should have proved significant for Aston but the home team raised their game and played as if they hadn't noticed. Their forwards put together some first class inter passing in determined attacks and their big men were allowed to get in behind the first line of defence causing Aston serious problems. They launched a huge rolling maul and their hooker went over near the posts leaving the kicker with an easy shot at goal to tie the scores before the break.
Aston made a positive start to the second period but they were unable to cope with the demands that Wednesbury placed on them in the line out and Aston's marking in this department was found wanting. Aston then lost a man to a yellow card and Wednesbury kicked the resulting penalty. before Aston's defence was once again called upon to stop a threatening attack one metre out. Aston were dangerous on the counter and some strong running from full back, Wall, allowed Chesnor to run free up the left wing, only to be hauled down in the last few metres. Indeed Aston had created many promising moments but had wasted them with a poor, final pass and it was to be such a pass, as they tried to play catch up in the final minutes, after a strong resurgence, that allowed Wednesbury to pick up and finish between the posts and convert for a much deserved victory.
