AOE 1sts v Bromsgrove ( Pre season. ) |
| Result: |
Aston Old Eds 28 -- 13 Bromsgrove |
| Report: |
|
Aston faced a tough task against a Bromsgrove side newly demoted from a higher league but faced up to the challenge and emerged worthy winners after a display of committed and attractive rugby. Aston began against the slope and did well in the early exchanges when Bromsgrove had most of the ball and looked to spread it wide. Aston's tackling was reliable, and it needed to be against the attacks of the visiting team. Bromsgrove had some pace but had nobody who could set their sprinters free. Eventually Aston got a penalty thirty metres out and kicked it to the corner and, from a good take at number two by Vlahakis, and an excellent drive by the forwards, Goldsmith claimed the try with Bennett converting. Bromsgrove went on the offensive immediately and Aston rebuffed a strong attack which almost brought a try. Aston cleared but Bromsgrove resumed and through forwards and backs got a deserved try but failed to convert. Aston bagged another when they stole a ball in a maul and broke out of their 22 with Harewood making most of the running before Windsor crossed near the posts with Bennett converting. Bromsgrove followed up with a penalty but Aston were going from strength to strength and they repeated their first half tactic of kicking their penalty to the corner for the catch and drive and this time it was Dunne who claimed the touchdown with Bennett adding the points. Bennett was soon in action again splitting the defence with a show of the ball and opening up the field for Grice to cross and Bennett to convert once again. Aston's handling and support had been good all afternoon as had been the tackling but one loose tackle let in Bromsgrove for a try near the end to make their score a little more respectable.
