Date: Sat 9th September 2006
Match: AOE 1sts v Burntwood ( League. )
Result: Aston Old Eds 42 -- 6 Burntwood.
Report:

Aston opened their league programme with an emphatic victory over their local and newly promoted rivals and scored six tries, two penalties and two conversions against two penalties. Aston's first try came from an unstoppable drive which had Burntwood flying backwards and Stanley claimed the touchdown. This was after Wood had collected a clearance kick on the touchline and impressive approach work. Their second try saw Chesnor go in at the corner after the ball was moved swiftly along the backs after skilful work from the pack. Burntwood notched two penalties as both sides won a share of ball and toiled away for some time without great success. Aston lacked composure at critical moments in attack whilst Burntwood won enough ball to do well but were often turned over as Aston's experience showed. Bennett added a penalty before the break to leave the score at 13-6 and Burntwood now had the advantage of the slope but had to contend with the wind in their faces.
Aston piled on the pressure from the restart and Chesnor got his second try after a strong run from Tovey who unloaded cleverly out of the tackle. Stanley disturbed the scorer with his second try after Aston's backs had shown their paces. The momentum was with Aston and though Burntwood made some breaks out of their half they were infrequent. After a scrum Aston attacked on the blind and Vlahakis crossed for a well deserved try before Burntwood tried a quick throw in at a line out. This proved to be a disaster as Aston were gifted the ball and Harewood crossed to punish their laxity. Bennett converted the last three tries of the game and added a penalty to conclude the scoring, reminding the visitors that promotion always serves up a new and tougher challenge.
