AOE 1sts v Ludlow ( League. ) |
| Result: |
Aston Old Eds 27 -- 7 Ludlow |
| Report: |
|
Aston played down the slope and against the wind and had slightly the better of the play in the opening ten minutes. They harried well from a scrum and had Ludlow in trouble but Ludlow scrambled a pass to fly half Williams who stepped his man and ran into a huge space. The defenders were not up to the task of stopping him and he went over from 75 metres and then converted his own try. Aston were unperturbed and mounted some solid charges. They set up a good ruck ten metres from the Ludlow line and Finn, coming in off the right wing, found unmarked space in the centre to go over with Bennett converting. Ludlow's forwards competed hard and, territorially, there was not much between the teams but Bennet's penalty edged Aston into the lead. Aston struggled in the line out as lack of co-ordination between thrower and jumpers made itself apparent Before half time, however, this worked to Aston's advantage. An errant Aston throw in was claimed by Ludlow and they set about launching an attack but their number eight threw a loose pass which was siezed upon by Tovey who rounded the full back to sail clear for Bennett to put the icing on the cake with the boot. Ludlow had made promising attacks also and great tackles by Finn and Chesnor prevented Aston from leaking two tries before the break. The opening exchanges of the second period were pretty dull before Williams, for Ludlow, showed his ability to beat a man with a searing glide through the defence. The attack made sixty metres but eventually was snuffed out by Aston's cover tackling. Aston came under pressure in the scrum and the truth is they struggled to get enough quality first phase ball from both set pieces. Ten points down at this stage Ludlow had plenty to fight for and plenty of fight left. They secured a strong position with a maul on Aston's five metre line and went close to scoring in the corner with much sweat from backs and forwards but it was Aston next on the sheet with a try from Zarifeh. Bennett put in an astute kick which was studiously chased by Chesnor who made ground before passing to Zarifeh playing the support role well. Bennett converted and had the last say with a further penalty to leave Aston with a twenty point margin and, so far, unbeaten.
