AOE 1sts v Brackley ( Senior Vase. ) |
| Result: |
Aston Old Eds 0 -- 19 Brackley |
| Report: |

Festivities in Edinburgh deprived Aston of half a team and left the fielded fifteen with a challenging task against opponents who had been winning their games by a hatful of points this season. Aston could not command superiority in any area of tight play but they competed well, once again, in the loose. Bennett missed an early penalty for Aston whilst Brackley hit the post with theirs before successfully slotting the next within a minute. Aston roared back with a fluent attack which was stemmed only as Chesnor was about to go in at the corner. Brackley got close when their assault was held up on the line and they began to win a large share of the ball. The game was delayed when Bennett broke his arm in a tackle and Windsor moved to fly half. Brackley piled on the pressure and were rewarded with a penalty for their efforts and then another in quick succession as Aston laboured in the scrum and put too much loose ball back at the line out. Half time saw Brackley with a nine point lead but Aston now had the advantage of the slope and were still in the game. Brackley opened well and were held up on the line but Aston's reply was encouraging as backs and forwards combined. The last pass in the attack was knocked on, one handed, by the Brackley winger to deny Aston a try in their best assault of the game. From this point Brackley began to take control whilst Aston were required to stand hard by their tackling, which they did. However, from Brackley's scrum on the left the fly half put in a perfect cross kick which was taken on the full by the right winger who sailed over unopposed but the conversion was missed. They scored another try from a kick which was well chased up for the game's last score and Aston had to be satisfied with saying that Brackley had not run through their tackling but had scored their tries from kicking the ball and outflanking the defence.
The Seconds went down to Old Sils 15-3 with Watts kicking the penalty. The Thirds had a tremendous win against Walsall. Hadley scored the try and King notched an elegant drop goal and kicked a conversion and a penalty.
