AOE 1sts v Old Salts ( League ) |
| Result: |
Aston Old Eds 6 -- 27 Old Salts. |
| Report: |
|
Aston took the benefit of the slope and made most of the early running. Under pressure Salts had a man yellow carded and Aston pressed home their advantage with a penalty from McNamee. Salts had Aston in trouble in the scrum and Aston found it hard to clear from the base under the close attention of the Salts' back row and scrum half. Jones, for Salts, opened their scoring with a try after a period in the Aston 22 and this was converted. Aston's line out work was erratic and with the set pieces not yielding the quantity nor quality of ball required, Aston had to compete in the loose. They did this quite well and, despite some determined attacking from the visitors, Salts failed to add to their tally before the break. With the slope to assist Salts struck two early blows in the second half with tries from Butler and a second for Jones. By this time Aston had lost their fly half, Wall, to injury and were embarked on a series of positional changes which did little for cohesion but they were far from finished and they fought their way to within five metres of the Salts' line and eventually McNamee kicked his second penalty. Salts began, at this stage, to show profit from the youthfulness of their side and flanker, Coton, crossed for an unconverted try. Aston came back again and mounted the most sustained attacks of the game. The scrum found a little stability and they pressed on the Salts' line for a time before the referee deemed one of their surges to be held up. They badly needed a score at this stage but Salts weathered the storm though a man once again was shown a yellow card . This did not prevent them from having the last word with a try at the death from Harris.
The Seconds had a solid 23-0 victory at Salts with tries for Watts, Harvey, Cambridge and Gardener who also got a penalty. The Thirds played an Aston School Fifteen and went down 32-15. Prosser, Pearson and Burnett bagged tries. The Fourths had a win 34-29 against Edwardians Thirds with three tries for Bartram, one each for Logan and Richards. Richards kicked a conversion as did Cunningham and Cabell. |
