AOE 1sts v Wolverhampton. ( League ) |
| Result: |
Aston Old Eds 19 -- 11 Wolverhampton. |
| Report: |

Aston pulled off a win in a stop-start game against a side which is at the lower end of the league table but which acquitted itself well on the day. Aston opened the scoring with a penalty from McNamee whilst Wolves missed with a couple of early attempts in a blustery wind which posed both teams problems throughout. Aston made an assault on the Wolves' line after a chip by Toole and almost made it over but were denied before they scored their first try with a flowing move started on their own ten metre line. With excellent handling and recycling Chase went in at the right hand corner but the conversion sailed wide in the difficult conditions. Wolves narrowed the gap with a penalty but Aston piled on the pressure and almost crossed the line again before they drew a penalty for their hard work and Toole converted. On the stroke of half time Wolves were awarded a penalty inside their own half and made an ambitious decision to go for goal, fully justified when the ball sailed between the posts with the help of the strong wind. Aston led 11-6 at the break and now played with the wind. They caught the ball from the kick off and launched an attack through the backs but a knock on was siezed upon by Wolves who, with a very creditable series of assaults, got their right wing over in the corner but missed the conversion. Aston added another penalty through Toole to retake the lead though Wolves did not lie down and pushed Aston back for a period before losing a man to a yellow card for a stiff arm tackle. Aston then made the game safe when Grice, taking advantage of an impressive rolling maul, nipped off the back, beat the first line of defence, and ran clear. Though the conversion was, once again, missed Aston finished the game very much on the offensive.
The Thirds had a strong win 21-0 against Warley Seconds with tries for Nevin, Greaves and Bradley and three conversions for Glasby. The Fourths were short and lost 35-19 to Bourneville Thirds. Tate scored three tries in a storming display and Duck and Tarpey got a conversion each.
