AOE 1sts v Wednesbury ( League. ) |
| Result: |
Aton Old Eds 25 -- 13 Wednesbury. |
| Report: |
|
In the last league match of the season Wednesbury surprised Aston by scoring a try in the second minute after kicking a penalty to the corner and driving the line out maul for Page to claim the honours. Aston made a spirited response and exerted a period of pressure in their opponents' 22 and, eventually, McNamee kicked a penalty. Aston kept the pressure firmly on the Wednesbury pack and did well in the rolling mauls but the line out work from both sides was very hit and miss. Aston added another penalty from McNamee before Field reciprocated for the visitors but the tide was very much with Aston as the half progressed. The forwards set up a strong position close to the Wednesbury line and the ball was moved through the hands until Toole found himself with a free run in after some sound support work, though the try went unconverted leaving Aston with a three point lead at the break. McNamee was just off target with his penalty attempt in the first minute of the second period as Aston made a strong start down the slope. Wednesbury, however, made a forceful riposte before being driven back from a threatening position ten metres from Aston's line. Both teams tried hard though there was little of note in the next fifteen minutes play but Aston lit the fuse with an excellent attack through the backs before Finn got over and McNamee converted. Some superb tackling from Aston created a ruck and the ball was taken on by Parkes before Finn got his second try and McNamee succeeded again with the conversion. Aston attacked once more through their backs but the Wednesbury full back, Field, intercepted and made a long and lonely journey up the hill to score a late try which was not converted. Normal service resumed and Aston pressed close to their target. They got over the line but the referee deemed that the ball had been held up and blew the whistle for full time giving Aston a much deserved victory after a late season rally which has done much for their confidence.
The Seconds made a draw with Handsworth 21-21. Cunningham scored two tries and Bevan got one with Gardener kicking two penalties. The Thirds went down narrowly 45-41 to Shrewsbury. Tries were scored by Willetts, S. Bradley, P.Bradley, Cleghorn, Loffman, Jimbo and Glasby kicked four conversions and a penalty. The Colts played an older and stronger side from Stourbridge and went down 46-5 in a spirited display. |
