AOE 1sts v Droitwich ( North Mids Shield Semi Final ) |
| Result: |
Droitwich 18 -- 28 Aston Old Eds. |
| Report: |

Aston fought their way into the final of the North Mids Shield with a confident display against a Droitwich side which has gained promotion by winning all its league matches this season. The home side got off to an impressive start by scoring a try through their scrum half and converting it before adding a penalty. Aston responded with a twenty metre drive from a line out and pushover with Parkes and Goodwin sharing the touchdown and McNamee converting. Aston were getting the better of a much bigger pack in the scrums and winning ball against the head with Dunn doing sterling work in the front row. The forwards did well around the field and Phipps showed well in the line out but half time saw Aston carrying a five point deficit. After the break Aston were much in command and a solid territorial advantage enabled Wood to dance through the defence to score under the posts and McNamee had an easy task with the kick. Aston added another try when the ball was worked down the blind side and Finn ran free to the corner for McNamee to kick an excellent conversion. Droitwich struck back fortuitously when an Aston attack broke down and the ball was hacked on for a touchdown after a cruel bounce presented the opportunity but Aston were not finished and Finn chased a kick, got a lucky bounce and notched his second try. McNamee, once again, was unerring with the conversion and this crowned his accomplished display of kicking throughout the match. Aston will play Halesonians in the final.
Aston took part in a Veterans' tournament at Old Edwardians but did not make the final whilst the Andy Sherlock Memorial Match was played on Sunday and an open game saw Aston steal the lead close to the finish.
