Date: Sat 20th October 2007
Match: Old Salts ( League )
Result: Aston Old Eds 11 -- 5 Old Salts.
Report:
Aston played with the advantage of the slope and proved themselves superior in the scrum in the early stages. They made several strong drives which caused problems for Salts in the back row. An excellent attack took them to within a couple of yards of their opponents' posts after a fifty yard surge and, after a powerful scrum, Woodward claimed a try which went unconverted. Salts later offended in a scrum and Platts kicked a penalty for the home side, increasing the lead to eight points. Salts stuck by their tackling and the rest of the half was rather dull and uneventful.
Down the slope Salts rallied well and were soon on the attack. From the middle of the field they made a dangerous overlap but the final pass was put down. Aston hit back hard and took the fight to the Salts' line but the position was lost as Salts showed that they could ruck effectively. Aston then established some fluency in their game and they carried the ball well and got involved in some sterling driving play. In addition, Phipps and Willetts took good ball for Aston in the line out and Marshall, standing in on the wing, gave a virtuoso performance. They were having the better of the territorial contest but Salts tackled strongly and put in extra effort whenever Aston approached their line. Salts then put points on the board when Lee, following a superb drive from their own 22, got in at the right corner after some good handling. It was left for Platts, for Aston, to finish the scoring with a penalty late in the game.

The Seconds beat Oswestry 39-5 with tries for Buller, Zubairu, Tucker, Midgeley and Llewellyn and Harcombe added fourteen points with the boot. The Thirds beat Dudley Kingswinford 54-19. Bradley and Thomas got two tries each and Markham, Buckle, Masters and Steadman got the others. Bradley capped a good day with seven conversions. The Fourths clinched an easy victory also against Bourneville Thirds 52-7. Beard junior and Jimmy each crossed twice and Cleghorn, Lewis, Cooksey, Marsh and Plant scored one try with Glasby kicking six conversions.
