AOE 1sts v Stafford ( League ) |
| Result: |
Aston Old Eds 11 -- 11 Stafford. |
| Report: |
|
Stafford were able to field their strongest team of the season and they made a sound start down the slope missing an early penalty. Aston put out a much changed side and they found some difficulty in the scrum where they were in retreat too often. Chesnor, at fly half, was off target with a penalty but snatched the lead for the home team with his second effort. They followed up with a powerful attack which took them to the left hand corner but strong Stafford defence relieved the pressure. From a line out they attacked , rucked the ball and spun it to the first centre who chipped to the corner for winger, Lewis, to chase and touch down at the flag. Their conversion failed but the try was enough to take the visitors into the break with a two point lead. The teams slugged it out in midfield for a while before Stafford had a man yellow carded. Good work on the 22 by Caddick, for Aston, and a quick ruck ball enabled Wood to find a gap and finish with a try but the conversion was unsuccessful. Stafford were straight back on the offensive and missed with a penalty attempt before getting the next on target as Aston struggled to clear ball from the base of the scrum. The visitors launched a driving maul from the Aston ten metre line and Aston eventually were penalised for Stafford to kick a penalty and level the scores. Aston then lost their number eight and worked hard to make up for this disadvantage whilst Stafford raised their game and went for the winning score. The final whistle sounded with the visitors attacking near the Aston line with the honours even. The Seconds went down 14-3 at Sutton with Maksymczuk scoring a penalty. The Thirds had a great win 66-18 over Barbarians. There were four tries for Masters, one each for Woodcock, Hughes, Buckle, Homer, Cleghorn and Tucker and Hughes kicked eight conversions. The Fourths beat Essington 15-7 with a try for Cunningham and two for Cooksey.
